PORCH TALK WITH UNCLE J

Real conversations about life, faith, family,
relationships, work, money, and the choices that
shape the men we become.

MEET UNCLE J

I’ve made some good choices in life. I’ve made some bad ones too. I’ve learned something from both.I grew up with two good parents and opportunities in front of me, but I still made choices that pulled me into gangs, selling drugs, and a lifestyle that could have taken my life in a completely different direction.Eventually, I walked away from that life.I earned my degree, built a career, got married, became a father, and spent nearly 15 years working for the federal government.I thought I had done what I was supposed to do.I thought I had built stability. Then, in my 40s, that career ended. After more than 100 job applications, rejection, financial pressure, DoorDash, questions about my purpose, and trying to hold it together for my family, I found myself starting over again. And that’s really what Porch Talk is about now.I’m rebuilding my life in real time and sharing what this season is teaching me about work, money, fatherhood, relationships, faith, pride, identity, purpose, and what happens when life doesn’t go according to plan.I’m not here because I have everything figured out.I’m still in it.I’m still learning. But I’ve lived enough life to know that sometimes hearing another man tell the truth about what he’s going through can help you look at your own situation a little differently. If you’re rebuilding too — or maybe you’re just trying to figure out what your next move is — you’re welcome here.Pull up a chair.

PULL UP A CHAIR

Life can get complicated fast.Sometimes you don’t need another person telling you what to do.Sometimes you just need a place to sit, think, hear an honest perspective, and figure out what your next move might be.That’s what this part of the porch is for.Below, you’ll find the different areas of life I’m learning about as I rebuild — work, money, fatherhood, relationships, faith, character, purpose, and starting over. Each section includes real conversations, reflection questions, a Bible verse connected to that part of the journey, and Porch Challenges to help you think through what comes next. And when you’re ready for more structure, you’ll also find guided Porch Workbooks built from many of the same questions and lessons I’ve been working through in my own life.Pull up a chair.Let’s figure out what comes next.

WEAR THE MESSAGE

Some messages are bigger than one conversation. Wear the words that speak to where you've been, what you've learned, and the person you're becoming.

LIFE & PERSONAL GROWTH

REBUILDING YOURSELF WHEN LIFE DOESN’T GO ACCORDING TO PLANLosing my career forced me to look at growth differently.I used to think growth meant moving forward, accomplishing more, hitting the next goal, and becoming more successful.
But sometimes growth starts when life knocks you backward.
When the plan changes. When your confidence takes a hit. When you don’t know what the next chapter looks like. That’s the season I’m in now.I’m learning that rebuilding doesn’t happen all at once.Sometimes it starts with one honest question. One small decision. One thing you can actually do today. One win. This part of the porch is about the things I’m learning as I try to rebuild myself — confidence, direction, fear, regret, identity, discipline, starting over, and learning how to keep moving when the whole road isn’t clear yet.You don’t have to fix your whole life today.Start with something you can actually do.ONE WIN TURNS INTO MANY.

PULL UP A CHAIR

WHAT CAN I DO FROM WHERE I’M STANDING?One thing this season keeps teaching me is that I can spend a lot of time staring at what I don’t have. The job I lost. The income I used to make. The opportunities that didn’t work out.The confidence I don’t always feel right now. Those limitations may be real.
But I’m learning there’s a difference between acknowledging what I don’t have and letting it decide what I do next.
I may not be able to control the whole situation. But I can ask:What can I do from where I’m standing? Then start there.

Video

A WORD TO CARRY WITH YOU

“Do not despise these small beginnings.”
— Zechariah 4:10
I’m learning this one in real time. When you’ve had a career, a title, a paycheck, and a plan, starting small can feel humbling.DoorDash can feel small. One job application can feel small. One good decision can feel small. One day where you don’t give up can feel small. But small doesn’t mean meaningless.Small can be the beginning. You’re not responsible for rebuilding your entire life today. You’re responsible for the next step.

PORCH CHALLENGE

GET ONE WIN.Think about the part of your life that feels the most overwhelming right now.Don’t try to solve the whole thing.
Ask yourself:
What is one move I can make in the next seven days that would prove I’m not completely stuck?Make it realistic.Make it measurable.Make it small enough that you can actually do it.That’s your finish line for this week. One win may not change your whole life. But it can change what you believe you’re capable of doing next.ONE WIN TURNS INTO MANY.

WEAR THE MESSAGESMALL STEPS. BIG CHANGE.

This one became a shirt because sometimes you need the reminder before you see the results. We tend to celebrate the big moments. The new job.
The finished goal.
The weight lost.
The thing finally accomplished.
But nobody really sees all the small decisions that happened before that. The day you started when you didn't feel ready. The day you did a little instead of doing nothing. The day you came back after falling off.The day you kept a promise to yourself that nobody else even knew you made. That's where change actually starts. You don't have to change everything today. You don't have to have the whole plan figured out.You just have to keep taking the next step.Small steps don't always look impressive.
But enough of them can change your life.
That's the message behind:SMALL STEPS. BIG CHANGE.

MONEY, WORK & STEWARDSHIP

MONEY LOOKS DIFFERENT WHEN THE STEADY PAYCHECK DISAPPEARS.For years, I knew another paycheck was coming. That didn’t mean we were rich. It didn’t mean I never worried about money. But there was comfort in knowing the next check was on the way. When I lost my federal career, that changed. Now I notice the movie tickets.
The eating out.
The convenience spending.
The $30 here.
The $40 there.
And after spending hours DoorDashing to make $80 or $90, I started asking a question I honestly didn’t ask enough before:Is this worth what it took me to earn it?This part of the porch is about what I’m learning as I rebuild — how we spend, what we call “enough,” how status can quietly influence our choices, and how a little breathing room can change the way normal life feels.I’m not becoming a financial expert.
I’m learning how to be more intentional with what comes into my hands.
BREATHING ROOM STARTS WITH ONE BETTER DECISION.

PULL UP A CHAIR

I STARTED REALIZING I WASN’T ALWAYS BUYING THE THING.Sometimes I was buying convenience.Sometimes relief.Sometimes reward after a hard week.Sometimes the feeling of being able to say yes.Sometimes I was spending simply because I knew another paycheck was coming. And yes — sometimes money can get tied to image, identity, or proving that we’re doing okay. When the steady paycheck disappeared, I started looking underneath the purchase instead of only looking at the price. That made me ask different questions:What happens emotionally when I get paid? What do I spend money on when I’m stressed, tired, or trying to reward myself? What purchases do I barely remember a few days later? What am I actually trying to get from this purchase? Is this worth what it took me to earn it?IF NOBODY COULD SEE IT, WOULD I STILL WANT IT?

Video

A WORD TO CARRY WITH YOU

WHAT DOES “ENOUGH” LOOK LIKE?Matthew 6:21“Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”For a long time, I thought doing well meant making more money and being able to say yes.I still want to rebuild.I still want another career.I still want to earn more. But this season is teaching me that making more and keeping more are two different things.Because if every dollar leaves as soon as it arrives, normal life can start feeling like an emergency.Maybe enough isn’t having everything.Maybe right now enough looks like:The mortgage paid.Food in the house.Gas in the car.The kids taken care of.A little money still sitting there when the tire needs replacing or something around the house breaks. And maybe stewardship starts by asking:Does the way I use my money reflect what I say matters most?

PORCH CHALLENGE

WAIT 72 HOURS.Think of one nonessential purchase you want to make this week.Don’t automatically tell yourself no.Just wait.72 HOURS.During that time, ask:Do I still want this? Why did I want it in the first place? What feeling was I trying to satisfy?Would I still want it if nobody else ever saw it?How many hours did I work to earn the money this costs? Then wait. After 72 hours, make the decision. If you still want it, it makes sense for your life, and you can afford it?Enjoy it.This isn’t about guilt. But if you realize you don’t actually want it anymore?Keep the money.WAITING ISN’T DEPRIVATION.
WAITING IS INFORMATION.

WEAR THE MESSAGE
STEWARDSHIP OVER STATUS

This one became a shirt for a reason. It’s a reminder. Not:“Try to look broke.”Not:“Never have anything nice.”It’s:I DON’T OWE ANYBODY THE APPEARANCE OF SUCCESS.Make money.Build something.Enjoy what you’ve worked for.Have nice things if they make sense for your life.Just don’t spend your money proving to people — who don’t pay your bills — that you’re doing okay.Keep the old car if it serves you.Keep the refrigerator if it works.Let somebody else have the bigger house.Build quietly if that’s what your season requires.Protect your peace.STOP MAKING OTHER PEOPLE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR LIFE.That’s the message behind:STEWARDSHIP OVER STATUS

READY TO PUT IN THE WORK?

STEWARDSHIP OVER STATUSFor the man who works hard — but still wonders why the money disappears so quickly. You probably don’t need another lecture telling you to stop buying coffee. And you probably don’t need somebody shaming you for every dollar you spend. The better questions are:Where does the money keep going? What keeps driving that pattern? What happens around payday, stress, convenience, reward, identity, and status? What would change if some of the money you worked so hard for actually stayed in your hands?

THIS ISN’T A 30-DAY SAVINGS CHALLENGE.It’s a behavior-change workbook designed to help you:SEE → NAME → INTERRUPT → KEEPYou’ll learn to:✓ See the pattern around your money✓ Name one repeating leak✓ Understand what triggers it✓ Use tools like the hours-of-work lens and 72-hour wait✓ Make decisions without an audience✓ Interrupt one spending pattern✓ Start keeping some of what you earn✓ Create breathing room without cutting everything you enjoyThe finished workbook is explicitly built around that framework and progression: see the pattern → name the leak → interrupt it → create breathing room.TAKE A LOOK INSIDE

RELATIONSHIPS & FAMILY

PRESENCE OVER PERFECTION.Fatherhood doesn’t always look the way you imagined it would. There’s work.Bills.Stress.Custody schedules.Exhaustion.Marriage.Blended families.Life.And sometimes the dad you thought you’d be gets buried underneath everything you’re trying to carry. That doesn’t mean you stopped loving your kids.It means real life showed up.Your kids don’t need a perfect dad. They need a dad who keeps showing up.A dad who listens.A dad who keeps his word.A dad who can say, “I was wrong.”A dad who gives them his attention when he can.A dad they can count on.SHOWING UP MATTERS MORE.

PULL UP A CHAIR

WHAT WILL THEY REMEMBER ABOUT YOU?Your kids may not remember every toy.Every birthday gift.Every vacation.Every overtime shift. But they may remember:Whether you listened.Whether you looked up from your phone.Whether they felt safe talking to you.Whether you laughed with them.Whether you showed up.Whether they felt like they mattered to you.And that can be hard to sit with when life is busy.Because sometimes we tell ourselves:“I’m doing all this for my family.”And that may be true. But providing for your family and being present with your family are not the same thing. So pull up a chair and ask yourself:When my kids want my attention, what do I usually do?Am I physically home but mentally somewhere else? What do I want my kids to remember about me 20 years from now? What small moment do I keep missing because I’m tired or distracted?Do the people I love get the best of me — or whatever is left over? And one big question:IF MY KIDS DESCRIBED ME SOMEDAY, WHAT WOULD I HOPE THEY SAY?

Video

A WORD TO CARRY WITH YOU

YOUR EXAMPLE BECOMES PART OF THEIR INHERITANCE.Proverbs 20:7 (NLT)“The godly walk with integrity; blessed are their children who follow them.”Integrity isn’t perfection. It’s the way you walk.Your kids are watching how you speak. How you treat people. How you handle frustration.Whether you keep your word.Whether you admit when you’re wrong. And what you do after you get it wrong. You don’t have to model perfection. You do want to model something worth following.YOUR EXAMPLE BECOMES PART OF WHAT THEY CARRY WITH THEM.

PORCH CHALLENGE

CATCH ONE ORDINARY MOMENT.This week, don’t plan anything big.Don’t buy anything.Don’t try to create the perfect family memory.Just notice one ordinary moment with your child and stay in it a little longer. When they start telling you something, listen. When they say, “Dad, watch this,” look.If they’re laughing, laugh with them.If they want to show you something you don’t understand, let them teach you.If they’re older, ask them something about their world and actually listen to the answer. No phone. No rushing to the next thing. No turning it into a lesson.Just be there. Then ask yourself:DID THEY FEEL LIKE I WAS REALLY WITH THEM?Big memories aren’t always planned. Sometimes they’re ordinary moments that somebody chose not to rush through.

WEAR THE MESSAGE

BE THE MAN THEY REMEMBER

You work because you love them. You carry the bills. You take the extra shift. You push through when you’re tired. You tell yourself:“I’m doing this for my family.”And you are.But one day, your kids are going to grow up.And when they look back, they may not remember how hard you worked to keep everything together. They may remember whether you were there.Whether you listened.Whether you kept your word.Whether they felt like they could come to you.Whether Dad looked up.Whether Dad showed up.That doesn’t mean providing doesn’t matter. It means you matter too.Not just what you earn. Not just what you buy.Not just what you sacrifice.THEY’RE NOT ONLY GOING TO REMEMBER WHAT YOU PROVIDED.
THEY’RE GOING TO REMEMBER YOU.
BE THE MAN THEY REMEMBER.

READY TO PUT IN THE WORK?

FAITH & PURPOSE

YOU DON’T NEED THE WHOLE PLAN TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP.Sometimes the hardest part of feeling lost isn’t that you have no options. It’s that there are too many voices. What you should be doing.Where you should be by now. What everybody else seems to have figured out. What used to work. What you’re afraid to lose. What you’re afraid to start over without. And underneath all of that, you’re asking:God, what am I supposed to do now?Maybe you don’t need another five-year plan.Maybe you need enough quiet to recognize what this season is asking of you.Enough faith to stop forcing answers you don’t have. And enough courage to take the next step you do know.YOU DON’T HAVE TO SEE THE WHOLE ROAD TO KEEP WALKING.

PULL UP A CHAIR

WHAT IF YOU’RE NOT LOST — YOU’RE JUST IN BETWEEN?There are seasons when life doesn’t look anything like you thought it would.A career changes.A door closes.Something you worked hard for ends. The title disappears. The plan falls apart. And suddenly you start questioning everything.Did I miss God?Did I waste all that time?Am I starting over? What am I supposed to do now?But maybe an ending doesn’t automatically mean the last chapter was a mistake.Maybe you learned something there.Maybe God built something in you there.Maybe that season did what it was supposed to do — and now you’re simply standing between what was and what comes next. The workbook makes that distinction too: a season can end without erasing what it gave you.So pull up a chair and ask yourself:What part of my life feels uncertain right now? What am I trying hardest to figure out? What ended that I’m still trying to make sense of?What am I afraid it means about me?What pressure am I putting on myself to already know what comes next? What is actually in front of me today? And one bigger question:WHAT IF THIS SEASON ISN’T ASKING ME TO HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS?WHAT IF IT’S ASKING ME TO BE FAITHFUL WITH WHAT I KNOW RIGHT NOW?

Video

A WORD TO CARRY WITH YOU

YOU MAY ONLY NEED ENOUGH LIGHT FOR THE NEXT STEP.Psalm 119:105 (NLT)“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”A lamp doesn’t light up ten miles of road.It gives you enough light to see where your feet are going. And sometimes that’s what faith looks like. Not knowing how the whole story ends. Not having every question answered. Not knowing exactly what life will look like a year from now.Just enough light to take the next faithful step.Sometimes we ask God for the whole map because uncertainty makes us uncomfortable. But He may be giving us enough for today.YOU DON’T NEED STEP TEN TO TAKE STEP ONE.

PORCH CHALLENGE

STOP ASKING ABOUT THE WHOLE ROAD.Think about the thing you’ve been praying about. The decision. The change. The uncertainty. The thing you keep asking:“God, what am I supposed to do?”Now make the question smaller.Instead of:“What am I supposed to do with my life?”Ask:“What is one faithful thing I can do with what I know today?”Maybe it’s:Make the call.Send the application.Have the conversation.Finish what you already started.Rest.Apologize.Ask for help.Serve where you already are.Or simply stop forcing an answer you don’t have yet.Write down one next step. Then do that.DON’T DEMAND THE WHOLE MAP BEFORE YOU’RE WILLING TO MOVE YOUR FEET.

WEAR THE MESSAGE

YOUR BEST CHAPTER MAY STILL BE AHEAD

Some chapters end before we’re ready. Some plans fall apart. Some doors close. And sometimes the season you thought would define your life becomes the season you have to walk away from. That can make you feel behind.Lost.Like the best part already happened.Like you somehow missed your chance. But your current chapter isn’t the whole book. You are still becoming.Still learning.Still being shaped.Still being used. And God is not limited by the version of your life you originally imagined.AN ENDING DOESN’T MEAN YOUR STORY IS OVER.YOUR BEST CHAPTER MAY STILL BE AHEAD.

CHARACTER & CHOICES

IT’S WHAT YOU KEEP DOING NEXT.Life can hand you some real stuff.Rejection.Disrespect.Bad bosses.Broken relationships.Closed doors.People who disappoint you.Things that genuinely weren’t fair. But eventually there’s another question worth asking:What do I keep doing when those things happen?Do I shut down?Blow up?Quit?Get defensive?Push people away?Refuse to apologize?Go back to the same people, habits, or environments that keep costing me?You don’t have to take responsibility for everything that happens to you.But you do have to decide what you’re going to do with the part that belongs to you.YOU MAY NOT CONTROL WHAT HAPPENED.
YOU DO HAVE A SAY IN WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.

PULL UP A CHAIR

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU PAID FOR THE SAME LESSON?Sometimes the names change. The job changes. The relationship changes. The city changes. The situation changes. But somehow the ending feels familiar. You lose your temper again. You shut somebody out again. You walk away too quickly again. You let pride keep you from fixing something again. You stop trying after rejection again. And eventually you have to ask:Why does this keep ending the same way? That doesn’t mean everything is your fault.Sometimes people really did you wrong. But if the same kind of problem keeps following you into different rooms, it may be worth looking at the one person who keeps walking into every room with you.You.The workbook makes that distinction too: accountability is not taking responsibility for everybody else; it’s being willing to examine your own part.So pull up a chair and ask yourself:What reaction do I usually regret after I calm down? What happens when someone corrects me?What do I do when I feel rejected?
What do I do when I feel disrespected?
What do I keep saying I’ll stop doing — and then do again? What has pride kept me from admitting?Where have I made my own life harder than it needed to be?And one bigger question:DO I ALREADY KNOW HOW THIS ENDS?Because if you’ve paid this bill before, maybe it’s time to stop paying it.

A WORD TO CARRY WITH YOU

REAL CHANGE STARTS BEFORE THE BEHAVIOR DOES.Romans 12:2 (NLT)“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”Sometimes we focus so hard on the thing we did that we never examine what happened before it.The assumption. The story we told ourselves. The pride. The fear. The anger. The belief that said:“They disrespected me.”“Nobody wants me.”“I’m done.”“I’ll show them.”And once we accept that story, the old reaction isn’t far behind.Transformation isn’t only about forcing yourself to act better.Sometimes it begins by becoming willing to think differently.CHANGE THE STORY BEFORE THE STORY MAKES THE CHOICE FOR YOU.

PORCH CHALLENGE

CATCH YOURSELF ONCE.This week, don’t try to fix your whole pattern.Just catch it once. The moment you feel yourself getting ready to:Send the text.Raise your voice.Shut down.Walk out.Quit.Defend yourself.Say something you know you’ll regret.Stop for one second and ask:“WHAT AM I ABOUT TO DO NEXT?”That’s it.You don’t even have to get the response perfect.Just notice the moment before the old reaction takes over.Because sometimes the first win isn’t:“I never did it again.”The first win is:“I caught myself.”YOU CAN’T CHOOSE DIFFERENTLY UNTIL YOU NOTICE THE MOMENT YOU HAVE A CHOICE.

WEAR THE MESSAGE

CHARACTER OVER PRIDE

Pride can feel strong in the moment. It can keep you from apologizing.Keep you from admitting you were wrong.Keep you from asking for help.Keep you from going back and fixing something.Keep you from letting somebody know they hurt you.And for a little while, pride can feel like protection. But protection can get expensive. It can cost trust.Relationships.Opportunities.Peace.Respect.Sometimes even the very thing you were trying to protect.WINNING THE MOMENT ISN’T WORTH LOSING THE THING THAT MATTERS.
CHARACTER OVER PRIDE.

READY TO PUT IN THE WORK?

STOP COSTING YOURSELFFor the man who keeps repeating one choice, reaction, or habit that makes his life harder. You probably already know something isn’t working.Maybe it’s anger.Pride.Defensiveness.Quitting too fast.Shutting people out.Making assumptions.Running back to what’s familiar.Reacting before you think. The hard part isn’t always knowing that the pattern exists. It’s understanding it well enough to stop letting it make decisions for you.

Stop Costing Yourself is a 30-day fillable workbook designed to help you slow down one repeated pattern, understand what keeps feeding it, and practice choosing differently when that moment comes again. Not your whole life. Not every problem.Just one pattern. One honest look. One different choice at a time.THE PAYOFF CAN COME NOW.THE BILL COMES LATER.
